In 2008 we began looking for a founding stallion with real presence, whose appeal would be far reaching, and fit our goal of breeding versatile “ranch style” horses.

In August Brooke arranged to inspect an 18 year old bay, not quite the picture I had in mind, but with good friend and trainer Travis Young along for a second opinion, and the testament of trusted friends Bruce and Jane O’Dell as to just how well Janes’ horse ( sired by The Colonel) was performing, we had a look. With Colonels’ owner away at the time, I walked in to his paddock, caught him, removed his many rugs, and was immediately impressed. By the time we left that day, I knew we had found our stallion! In September he joined us on the farm in Naracoorte.

Having had The Colonel around each day we have come to appreciate his full worth. It became clear to us right away that this is an intelligent horse, who has been handled by accomplished horsemen and women his whole life, and arrived in great shape. His seemingly effortless, graceful movement continues to impress, and reassures us we have made the right choice. During his first season with us, Colonel proved himself a gentle easy breeder hitting all our mares without incident, and readying us for the years ahead.

The colonel has many progeny on the ground all around the country (including several to stock horse mares). We have spoken to many owners who are full of praise and affection for their horses, and the colonels’ ability to pass on his athleticism and gentle disposition to his offspring. His many get can be found in a variety of disciplines achieving at the top level, with his mares keenly sought after by breeders for their consistency of type and athletic build. Demonstrating colonels’ fit with our goal of producing versatile horses, it is in events requiring speed and agility where his most highly credentialed offspring can be found. Two fine examples of this are “Foolin on Deck” a champion barrel horse, and showing his undoubted cow sense “Only Kiddin Sam” a top class camp drafter.
